We are an Alliance of the former Woolwich & District and Eltham & District Sunday Leagues. Mrs Pat Tansley was instrumental in the development and success of both these former organisations and played her part on both Committees at different times.
A thoroughly respected and enthusiastic ‘football’ lady, she won many admirers with her approach to both football administration and the way her team “Springhill United” played the game. What is often forgotten or not known by many is that she also, along with Arthur of course, looked after many young people in her own home, giving them guidance, discipline, morals and a set of “life rules” to follow, which made them the people they are today.
As stated overleaf, this is the playing of “The Pat Tansley Memorial Cup” and it has become the Alliance’s ‘curtain-raiser’ to each season - our own “Charity Shield”.
Due to popularity and the all-inclusive ethos of the WESFA we introduced a match for the best sportsmanship team of the previous season to play against our panel of Referees last year (2013-2014). Everybody enjoyed the experience and therefore we have incorporated it into this annual event to make a day of celebration and fund-raising. Last season’s sportsmanship team of the year is AFC Sporting Greenwich so they are the WESFA Referees opponents.
The Pat Tansley Memorial Cup is contested by the league winners & the Dewar Shield winners.
